    Great app – really fast.

    Couple of suggestions:

    – cropping in the source PDF isn’t recognized so a bunch of my PDF books are illegible since most of the page is offscreen

    – remember the last viewed page upon reopening a PDF – currently it just takes you back to the first page

    – folders for organizing PDFs would be awesome

Looking forward to future updates – thanks!

      Hi pac-man,

      I appreciate your suggestions.
I will implement and release useful features as soon as I can.

Read a newspaper in PDF everything day, when i leave The file with The same name that the day before, does not matter I delete the previous file manually with iTunes, bookman does not update the cache, and show the past version of the file.

For the wish list, a zoom tool.

        Thanks for your app,

        Eduardo

A nice nevigation for PDF files.

Unfortunately, we can not upload the files via Itune, if there are other programs such as “goodreader” or “air sharing” installed. The PDF files uploaded will appear in other programs instead of “bookman”.

    • May 4, 2010 at 8:40 pm

      Hi min,

Did you select the Bookman from the list “Apps” under the File Sharing before dropping your files into the Documents window?

      Thank you,

    Hey,
looking good so far and here are my “wish-list” for features:

    1. Be able to delete files from within the app. (Don’t want the Bookman pdf there anymore.)
And not everybody knows that you have to select the file and press the backspace button on the keyboard in the file sharing window in iTunes to delete pdfs.
    2. “manga” feature in landscape mode would be awesome. (just change the order of the two pages.)
    3. Bookmarking (of course 😉
    4. Archiving or “badges” on the cover to indicate how much has been read, unread & read etc.
    5. Maybe a pile of “read” pdfs scattered on the bottom of the screen…

Thanks for a great app, really looking forward to the next update.
    Tobias

    Great PDF viewer!

One little software error: When you add pages to a PDF an copy the file to the bookman directory, bookman doesn’t recognize the extra pages correctly; renaming the file to one that didn’t exist earlier solves the problem.

  6. Machiel
    May 7, 2010 at 7:15 am

    Suggestion:

A modus for landscape formatted docs; Maybe: in vertical screen modus two landscape pages beneath each other, in horizontal screen modus one landscape page (the opposite of the current integrated portrait document modus)

    • May 8, 2010 at 12:08 am

      Hi Machiel,

I appreciate your suggestion and an error report.

      Thank you,

      Hi Joe,

Sorry if I misunderstand your comment.

Please tell me how do I delete the files I no longer need in Bookman from my iPad?

    • May 8, 2010 at 3:15 pm

This is the way to delete files you added.

      1. Open iTunes and connect your iPad.
      2. Open File Sharing in Apps tab.
      3. Select the file which you want to delete.
      4. Press delete key.

      Thank you,
      Takashi

  9. Noel
    May 8, 2010 at 3:40 pm

    One bug I noticed:

If an image is 768 wide but less than 1024 high, if viewed in portrait, the app stretches the image to fit the whole screen. The app should respect the image height if it’s less than the screen resolution. If you resize it then it should respect the aspect ratio.

One request: a fit-to-width option in settings. We can just scroll top to bottom if the image is too long.

Great app, by the way that hopefully gets optimized over time.

    • May 8, 2010 at 11:15 pm

      Hi Noel,

I appreciate your bug report and request.

    Fantastic job Takashi

Your reader loads faster than any other available and is very easy to use.

Unfortunately until it is possible to zoom in to read all the text your app cannot be used to read magazines which in my opinion is the largest market for this type of app

If zoom and a delete function are added I would expect this app to be in the top 10 on the app store.

    Thanks for your hard work.

    • May 10, 2010 at 10:59 pm

      Hi Tim,

      I appreciate your comment.
Folder organization with a delete function will be supported in Ver.1.2.
Also, zoom will be supported in Ver.1.3.

    May 12, 2010 at 8:15 am

I try to keep manuals with me when I’m visiting clients. Trying to convert the PDFs to ePUB has not been a good experience nor has been using GoodReader because it’s VERY slow rendering graphics. When I started using Bookman, I came to the realization that converting already formatted PDFs is a waste of time and energy.

    A one suggestion I haven’t seen mentioned:

Better navigation tools. I frequently will have PDFs of over 500 pages. The Page Navigator is too slow to render all the pages (it’s slow even with 20 pages, but not a big problem) so scrolling to the section I need takes a long time. It definitely needs a “Go to beginning” and “Go to end” but something like a “Go to page ___” would be great.

I eagerly await the folder organization feature. With hundreds of PDFs, the Library is a bit large.

Zoom will be nice but not necessary for me as I can always rotate to a single page. Hopefully, the schedules for delivery of 1.2 and 1.3 are short.

    Thank you,

    Bruce

    • May 13, 2010 at 9:40 am

      Hi Bruce,

I appreciate your comment and suggestion.
I understand the Page Navigator is very slow when you open a document for the first time.
The Page Navigator will be faster when you open a document which you have read once, because Bookman has a cache system.
Anyway, I will keep improving Bookman.

The folder organization has been implemented. I’m testing it now.
Maybe I can send it to Apple this week.

      Thank you,
      Takashi

    Hello,

How do I delete files from Bookman?

    • Bruce Gerson
      May 13, 2010 at 5:27 am

With the iPad connected, click on the iPad in the Devices section of iTunes. Click on the Apps tab, scroll down to the File Sharing section of the page and click on Bookman. Highlight the book(s) you want to delete (you can do more than one-at-a-time using shift-click or command-click), hit the Delete key, confirm the deletion and click the Sync button.

I really like the app, it’s blindingly fast!

Just a quick note that will make a new user’s life much easier: if you state in the included PDF that it should be read in portrait mode, then the navigation diagram on page 2 instantly makes sense, in landscape mode it was a bit confusing.

I echo the zoom and navigation comments, but already this is better than trying to view big PDF’s in Airsharing etc.

    Nice work!

    • May 21, 2010 at 2:19 am

      Hi Ross,

      I appreciate your comment.

This app is absolutely gorgeous. Big step up from the last app I was using.

Though a couple of suggestions which’d make it even better:
    – Folders (for comic series and stuff)
    – In-app file deletion (like the user manual)
    – In-app file renaming
    – In-app file download (just paste a link from Safari to download, perhaps even a bookmarklet?)
    – Single page view in landscape mode (my text is too small to have two pages on the iPad!)

That said I’ve only spent a few minutes with it and I love it already.
Thanks a bunch for this great (and free?!) app!

    • May 21, 2010 at 2:27 am

      Hi Alex,

      I appreciate your comment.
I’ve sent Bookman Ver.1.2 which supports folder organization to Apple, so probably it will be released soon.
The folder organization supports deletion, renaming and moving.

I think the features you mentioned are nice.
      Thank you for your suggestions.

    Hi Takashi,

GREAT app, very fast, the best PDF viewer on app store. Folder org is less relevant than bookmark feature for me : you can already organize using iTunes, so no big deal. However without bookmark feature, I’m left scrambling around trying to remember where I was!
Anyway, keep up the good work, if bookmark & zoom features get added, I’d be happy to pay (I already bought good reader and that’s hard to use with the delay in page turns)!

    • May 28, 2010 at 10:47 pm

      Hi Toomanybarts,

    Hi Takashi,

I currently use the application primarily to view a set of images within .zip files (downloaded mangas). However I notice that when viewing a set, the images are not sorted according to their filenames. Not sure if its a bug or an unimplemented feature, but I’d like to suggest to sort the images by filenames by default (since this is the most common), or to give the user some options of sorting the images.

    Thanks!

    • May 28, 2010 at 10:55 pm

      Hi La1ka,

Thank you very much for your bug report.

    Hi,

love your app! But I have a problem with certain PDFs: Their printing margins are displayed, making it look a bit weird.

I am also looking forward to seeing two pages next to each other in landscape mode. It would make browsing more attractive. Also, please reduce the font size for long file names before using “…”.

    • June 10, 2010 at 12:46 pm

      Hi Nik,

      Thank you for your comment.

Bookman Ver.1.3 will support variety of viewing styles so that users can read effectively.
It will also support that features you mentioned.

Sorry about a problem you mentioned.

  27. Pres
    June 6, 2010 at 11:36 pm

Great work! I’ve looked at a lot of book readers and Bookman is really close to what I’m wanting.

    Good points:
    * Very fast paging makes it easy to skim.
    * Thumbnail view makes it easy to jump around.
    * Import & export via iTunes works great. And we can rename files there, too!
    * 2-page spreads are displayed very nicely.

I realize the current version is free so I shouldn’t ask for too much, but with a few tweaks Bookman could easily become one of the best readers out there. Specifically…

    Critical tweaks needed:

    * Remember the most recent page for each book! This problem currently makes Bookman difficult to rely upon for serious reading.
    * Support right-to-left (Japanese) page flow. And once set, the app should remember which books flow in which directions.

    Lower-priority tweaks:

    * On app start, return to the book being read when the app quit (if any).
    * Turn 2 pages while in landscape orientation so we don’t have to keep tapping twice. (But we still need a way to easily adjust when a scanned book gets out of sync because a page is missing. Currently I momentarily switch to portrait mode to “turn a single page” in landscape orientation).
    * Bookmarks. Either support existing PDF bookmarks, or let us set custom bookmarks within Bookman.
    * The interface should be more standard: One tap could show the control bar with “Library” and “Thumbnails” buttons. (Currently one mistaken tap at the top of the screen throws me into the library and forgets everything about where I was reading.) Other possible buttons: “Right to Left” page flow for e.g manga, “Jump 1 page” (to adjust out-of-sync books as mentioned above). Then the tap zones can be bigger so they’re more intuitive.
    * It should try to update its thumbnails in the background when possible.
    * Images that don’t match the screen proportions (e.g. wide images) get distorted to fit.

A lot to ask, I know, but thanks for listening! 🙂

    • June 10, 2010 at 12:58 pm

      Hi Pres,

Thank you for your very useful suggestions.

Bookman Ver.1.3 will support all of the features you mentioned as critical tweaks and some features in lower-priority tweaks.

I like Bookman for it’s fast scrolling through the pages of my pdf’s. One thing doesn’t work though. I cannot get a series of pdf’s into a folder. When I edit, I can drag a pdf, but when I release it on top of a folder, it only moves back to it’s original position.

Is this normal? Because I have LOT’s of books in pdf that should be organized, because each pdf is one chapter of a book. (yeah I know, it sounds stupid, but I didn’t make them, it’s Microsoft’s fault 😉

    • ender12041
      June 9, 2010 at 2:33 pm

You have to first tap “edit”, then drag each pdf that you want to be in the folder into the little box in the bottom right-hand corner. Next, tap on your folder that you created. Once in the folder, tap the box again and Voila!

Hi Takashi, great product. Love the new .cbr viewing function.
I have been loading my .cbr files into Bookman, but after loading over 500, found that the icons were not showing anymore. I then found that all the ones with icons now only showed the first page when reading them. Ones that I had already opened did show every page. New ones without icons show all pages blank.
I think I might have reached a cache limit. I tried removing all. I then deleted Bookman and then re added it, but still all show up without icon images and all pages are blank. Even ones that did work before.
Great if you could help. Thanks, sacada.

    • June 23, 2010 at 3:25 am

      Hi sacada,

      Sorry for the inconvenience.
I think the reason of the issue is memory limit.
Could you try to organize the files with folders?
I recommend the amount of files in a folder is less than 100 files.

      Thank you,
      Takashi

      • June 23, 2010 at 3:38 am

        Hi Takashi,

Yes, I did have them in folders of 100 before the problem started as more than that kept crashing Bookman.

The problem is still there now, even after deleting everything and just adding a couple of files. The icons won’t show anymore and the files are all blank pages, including the previews after the cbr is optimized.

I also just tested a pdf. It seems to still work fine.

        • June 23, 2010 at 3:55 am

          Hi sacada,

The cache data with blank page still remain in the system.
The cache data will be updated if the original file is updated.

Unfortunately, Bookman Ver.1.3 doesn’t have the feature to remove cache data manually.

Could you try to re-install Bookman?
After that, please transfer the files less than 100 files at a time and organize that with folders.

I know that makes you spend a lot of time.
I’m very sorry for the inconvenience.

          Thank you,
          Takashi

I did a backup and then a re-install of Bookman. It is now working. I will put upload 50 at a time and put into folders. Thanks for help and quick response.

Hi, it happened again after only 200 cbr files. I will try to figure out what is causing it (or which file, it may be a big one??? or something). Biggest problem is to fix it is to re-install.

              • June 23, 2010 at 3:20 pm

                Hi sacada,

                I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

I forgot to mention there are two ways to delete files.

Could you delete the file with the interface of Bookman?
Press Edit buton and press X icon of the file.
That way will delete the cache data correctly.
If you delete the file with using iTunes, the cache data isn’t deleted.

                Thank you,
                Takashi

              July 2, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Icon bottom right with plus sign. The other icon (box) is the clipboard. Drag stuff in there, then click on a folder you have created, then click on clipboard box to unload. Different but great when you understand it.

Great app! The best, not to mention FREE, PDF app I found so far.

My suggestion would be (like others have said) the ability to organize folders within iTunes. Especially true for complex folder structures involving many PDFs.

It would also be awesome if the folders created can be passcode locked. This way sensitive or personal PDFs can be loaded onto the iPad.

Is the folder objects something of your own creation? Or it’s provided by the Apple SDK?

Thanks so much for doing this project Takashi.

      Hi Panman,

    Hi!

Nice app. I have a bug to report though. I put in a comic in .zip format and the app shows the comic but for some reason it has a lot of blank pages at the start. The .zip file has no extra pages and yet in the ipad it shows blank pages. I am not sure what is causing this.

    Thanks.

Hi Chewy, I had the same problem with some of my cbr’s. I solved the problem by unpacking and repacking the zip file.

Hi Takashi, I like your program very much ! For the wishlist: If I zoom a page in landscapemode in order to fit the screen its flips to the original scale when I tap next page. Is it possible to implement a feature that fixates the zoom percentage?

      Much appreciated !

While this is probably the best pdf reader currently available for the iPad I have one small gripe.
The zoom feature in the latest release gives ‘fuzzy’ text when enlarged which is difficult to read.
I have tested the same pdf in both Bookman and PDFReader as well as some others where the enlarged text is clear and sharp. A fix, for older eyes, would be appreciated.

    Hi Takashi,

great work – especially because it’s a free app!

I want to use your app (only) for reading comics and i have mentioned some differences in picture quality between bookman, iBooks and cloudreader. Bookman is generally the best app from that list (because of the combination of thumbnails and editable categories) – but the picture quality is lower than in the other two apps. I don’t know why this should happen – i tested this problem with the same comic (a pdf file) to make sure, that my eyes are working correctly. Especially around text in comic-bubbles it seems like there are more jpg-artifacts.

A second mention: is it possible to hide the iOS-toolbar from the top when in readingmode? The most apps for reading PDF or comics are doing that as well and in my opinion it looks cleaner while you have also a little bit of more space to showing the content.

    Greetings,
    Brandjunge

Great app I just have some suggestions/requests, I read manga using this app but many pages should be viewed in landscape mode, when I rotate the screen it shows two pages instead of making the picture bigger, can you add an option for that?
I have zip files containing other zip files, the app goes kinda crazy with those
Is there any plans to add a basic file manager like good reader, right now it’s my app of choice for reading comic/manga( I tried comic reader and comic zeal) it has a slow image renderer but I like the file manager approach the other fail at grouping my files properly, though your app has a different approach to managing files as well, just a though
    Thanks for the app

It’s good be nice if you can update folder which can see through one of the book that organizes inside instead of grey icon book. Dear Takashi,

    Your application is simply GREAT.

I would like to see in the future:

    1. Method to import directly folders into bookman
(Now I import then I move the files and then I create folder on bookman. No need to create folder inside the app, just drag and drop the folders from itunes or whatever and boom)
    2. Folders icons in color
    3. Faster rendering for thumbnail view (if you have more than 60 files, it start to slow down big time)
    4. Have an option to see the page number anytime
    5. Have an option to see all the time light icons like home, thumbnail view, next page, previous page
    5. Agreed with FIRE with rotating / 2 pages thing
    6. Slide Show option (turn page automatically every x seconds)

When will you release the next update of this fantastic app?

    Hi again,

for those who have blank pages in cbrs/cbrz, please check that the .jpg inside doesn’t have any “extra extension”, i mean, that the files are “file-000.jpg” and NOT are “file.000.jpg”. I have found some blank cbr/cbz and all of those have multiple extensions inside. I’ve removed and named correctly the files and the CBR/CBZ are shown correctly.

Another suggestion for futures releases: a folder picture (for example, a file called “folder.jpg” inside a folder could be the folder picture).

        Hello Takashi

Thank you for your quick answer.

I think I didn’t mention it correct – we want to write our own app to get the files to the ipad and invoke your bookman for displaying services. Do you think thats possible?

        Christian

        • August 11, 2010 at 4:08 pm

          Hi Christian,

          I understand.
You can invoke the Bookman with using UIDocumentInteractionController from your app.
It will show “Open In” window in your app, and then user can select the app such as Bookman, GoodReader.

If you want to invoke Bookman directly without “Open In”, I think I need to support the feature that other apps can invoke bookman with [UIApplication openURL].

If you need the feature, please let me know.
          I can support it.

    Hi Takashi,
I enjoy Bookman as it allows me to read pdf,cbr and rar files located in folders whereas CloudReader, GoodReader and IBooks cannot allow such versatility.
    I still encounter 2 problems :
    – I use Ifile from Cydia with the USB photo kit and a USB key to copy directories as I cannot figure out how to synchronize a directory in ITunes.
    – Bookman runs out of memory and exits when I open a folder with 500 files. 100 is OK. I didn’t check yet in-betweens like 200 files.
Thanks for the work, awaiting 2.0 but this version is already doing the job for me.

Is there a way to make notes and markups? Looks good but needs that function to take notes.

      Hi John,

      No, there isn’t.

Thanks for the wonderful app Takashi.
I have one problem with the app though. Sometimes while I’m viewing a cbr/cbz file, it will randomly crash to the home screen. Is this due to memory limitations? Is there a recommended size limit to the files I view?

    • September 4, 2010 at 4:17 pm

      Hi Tora,

      I’m sorry for the inconvenience.
      Version 2.0 fixed memory issue.

Hello there! Wonderful app, but I second what some observe — the same PDF, in ibooks will somehow render text pretty crisp, whereas in bookman the text font quality is mediocre, and zooming in doesn’t help (unlike ibooks where it just gets crisper almost!)

    • September 4, 2010 at 4:18 pm

      Hi isthar,

      Thank you for your comment.
      Version 2.0 improved rendering quality.
      Please try it.

        Hi Takashi,
I still notice that the rendering is quite poor compared to iBooks or GoodReader. (I take an example of a pdf magazine)
This issue itself prevents me to use Bookman which is perfect in all other respects.
You are doing a great job here, but you will understand, that this is the most important criteria of a book reader, all other features are secondary.Kindly address this issue.
I have even taken a screenshot from other apps and yours, please let me know if I can send them to u somewhere.

    Hello Takashi

    great ans marvellous!!!

    Speed and zooming – top!
    Concept of bookshelves – top!

It might be very useful to show a bookshelf in a bookshelf with an icon – that makes navigation much easier. Is it possible to add a way back option on the wooden top for that reason too?

There is an error in the functionality for the bookshelves.

After changing the name of the shelf and hitting the cursor remains on the input window (the button on top right corner shows again!) and I was able to delete or enter characters (name of the selected shelf)

After moving a document you can still find the “old name and folder” in – there’s a red exclamation mark in the shown icon – and one cannot go to the document any more. Is there a way to take this into account during move.

    Nevertheless – great job!!

    Christian

      Thank you for your comments!

The home icon on bottom right corner lets you go back ‘My Library’.

This app is great for reading comics but I have found some serious bug.
When in cbz or cbr file is a txt file together with jpgs then app can’t show anything just black screen and usually crash. It seems that this happen also when jpgs are mixed with bmp files.
This is a serious problem because many cbr/cbz files has txt info file inside and can’t be viewed without repack and deleting these files.

I am switching between the previous help book and the new one that came with 2.0; when i do so, and then move between pages in the second document opened, the app just crashes to the home screen. hope this will help to find the bug. many thanks 4 your work, keep it up!

    Hey guys!

This app is actually really good, and 2.0 has WONDERFUL features. I use this as my comic book reader on the iPad, and it seriously kicks ass… I’ve been having issues with it though, as a lot of comic books I load into the program only display the first page… and sometimes as all blank pages. Could also be the same issue that “fenix” is having.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Excellent update with lots of nice features.

One minor request on the portrait display, could a picture be displayed starting from the right if the page order is set to right to left when the third portrait zoom mode is used?

A two page scan manga starts from the right page to the left page, viewing in portrait mode using the third zoom option currently will show the left page first, so I need to slide to the right side to view the first page and slide back to the left side to view the second page. Would be helpful if the right side can be loaded first if the page order is from right to left.

It’s a very good app. However, I’ve experienced a serious issue, the pdf shown in Bookman (especially in landscape mode) is not as crispy as it’s shown in other pdf reader. It will be an excellent app is this issue can be resolved in the next version.

Thanx a lot for this wonderful ComicReader. Excellent work. I have only small issues left:
    – the new buttons are pretty small
    – some settings should make their way from the book-specific settings to general settings (like fit-to-width in landscape, wonderful option)
    – could you remember the zoom level when turning pages? Many people need this.
    – writing the apps name in the icon was probably not your best idea 🙂

I’m having a problem with the FTP feature. I enable FTP with a username and password and I can’t seem to keep the app open for longer than 10 or 15 seconds. It just exits back to the iPad desktop regardless if I’m connected through FTP. I have quite a few gigs of PDFs in folders when I upgraded to the current version, if that helps.

  73. Harry
    September 4, 2010 at 1:11 am

Okay. So I discovered that clearing the cache corrected the problem, but I found after transferring a number of files and refreshing caused the crashing again. So I cleared the cache once more. I transferred a few more files, and while in the middle of transferring the last file it crashed again. Now I suspect the cache is corrupt, because Bookman starts with a blank bookcase it pauses for 10 seconds not accepting any input and crashes. Is there a way to manually clear the crash in this case where the app is not responsive and crashing?

    HI!
I noticed a problem: apparently CBR archives don’t work correctly. New files I add show just black screen and older files (add with previous version of bookman) work well until I clear cache. I try with a lot of diferent CBR files and none work.

I think the app got a lot better with version 2.0, but this problem does that a lot of my comics weren’t working

    Thanks

    Hi,
First off, thanks for a great app !
However, I need to agree with jodorowsky above, the rendered PDF image in Bookman is somehow more blurry than others readers. Cloudreaders is the best, Stanza second, n Bookman is third (not that is bad).
This app is so close to be the perfect reader, the other readers cannot compare at all when it comes to the features that u have.
Pls, pls help look into the rendering issue, I promise to delete the rest of readers once it’s fixed. 🙂
Once again, thanks for the efforts !

I have tried connecting to it with Filezilla using the default setting of port 2121. I also tried setting it to port 21 and using an old client “Reflections FTP”. Neither could connect.

I have been trying to use this app to read .cbr files. I have several issues of a series loaded up. After transferring them, bookman read the 1st issue with no problems. After that, however, it has refused to read any more .cbr files. In fact, it won’t even acknowledge that they are in the library anymore. I’ve checked the files and they are all valid (none are corrupt). When I manually navigate to a file and attempt to open it, I receive the right number of pages, but they are all blank. Just flat black.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    • Corey
      September 8, 2010 at 6:03 pm

I think I have this resolved; I uninstalled then reinstalled the app. I think the bug I found may have had something to do with the cache. Possibly when I created multiple directories over the FTP connection? Some of them were nested.

      • Corey
        September 11, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Still getting the problem. It seems to happen if I use FTP to delete files or create new directories, but not every time.

    Hello,
    Great app … Thanks!
    Just three suggestions:
    – when importing a PDF from email, it’d be great if you were given the chance to choose which bookshelf to put it on
    – another option for tap zones: no ‘zones’ at all, but just a double tap anywhere to zoom in or out, and a single tap anywhere to bring up the menu. I think this would be considered standard behaviour for many apps
    – some method of seeing a pdf’s filename while it’s on the bookshelf (because when you’ve a lot of pdf’s with a very similar first page, you can’t tell which is which until you open each file)

    Thanks again!

    Hi,

-I am having a problem with my Ipad 64, when i put a lot of (20)cbz or cbr, I have a crash when i synchronize, the memory become 4Giga. I must restore the Ipad to have 64Giga.
(i try with itunes 9.2 and itunes 10)

-Some cbz or cbr don’t have the thumbnail even if i clear cache.

-Some cbz or cbr have not the 1 first page display on the thumbanil.
    ex:
    (file.cbz)
page000.jpg => become number 46 in bookman NOK
page000b.jpg => become number 02 in bookman NOK
page001.jpg => become number 01 in bookman NOK

    I rename page000b.jpg to page046.jpg
    Now page000.jpg => become number 01 OK
    page046.jpg => become number 46 OK
    page001.jpg => become number 45 NOK

-It’s not possible to rename “My library”.

Great app! But some suggestions though:

-It’d be great if the pages can be fullscreen. (it now shows the status/clock bar) This is a waste of screen estate.

-The text and pictures are blurry compared to other pdf-apps. Maybe it’s possible to render them with an unsharp mask?

    Hi,

I have a couple questions, haven’t been able to find it by googling around… thought maybe the people here might have an answer.

I have started using Bookman in conjunction with Dropbox. Using the read with Bookman option within Dropbox is perfect, and it seems that once I read with Bookman that those PDFs are now ‘in’ Bookman and able to be accessed without even being online anymore? Is that true? Does Bookman ‘copy’ those PDFs into its own storage? And… if so where is the Bookman storage. (Dropbox requires network access)

I am asking partly because I have had issue moving files with iTunes, probably just me, but this other option seems to be working great and was curious if others found the same thing.

Thanks… and keep up the good work… great app.

    Bob

When Bookman is invoked from other application such as Dropbox and GoodReader, iOS automatically copies the file into the directory ‘Inbox’ in Bookman.
You can see the directory as a bookshelf in Bookman.

      Thank you,
      Takashi

    Hi,
I think Bookman is a wonderful application — thanks!!
    A couple things:
    – it seems to have issues with some pdf files: e.g. http://www.mathworks.com/help/pdf_doc/distcomp/distcomp.pdf — after it is opened, Bookman crashes after some time — seems related to caching, as turning auto caching off prevents the crash
    – as the above commenter mentioned, it’s nice to be able to open files from Dropbox in Bookman — is there any way to save these files to the Bookman library as well?
(btw. the crash I mentioned occurred on a file opened in this manner; not sure if this is related).

    Thanks again for great work!

    • September 21, 2010 at 5:07 pm

It seems that Bookman can open the PDF.
The file might require more memory to open.
Please try to reboot your iPad to clear other memory.

When you open Bookman from Dropbox, PDF is copied into the directory ‘Inbox’ in Bookman.
You can also copy the file to the other bookshelf.

      Thank you,
      Takashi

    Hi,

I tried the 2.0.1 version, but I can’t see my CBR’s. I wait for the next version. Do you want any of my files to try?

Are you going to translate Bookman to another languages? If do you want, I can help you whith spanish translation.

    Thanks

    • September 21, 2010 at 5:24 pm

      Sorry for the inconvenience.
I’m going to submit the next version which fixed the bug in this week.

Thank you very much for helping us.
Could you send us some CBRs, if it is possible?
It will be very helpful for us to test.

We have a plan to translate Bookman to another languages.
We are thinking that we order the translation to other company.
      Thank you very much.

      Thank you,
      Takashi

    This app is great!
    Why?
    I’ll tell you!

    Things I liked:
    – folders
    – cbz,cbr compatibility
    – interface (shelf with thumbnails, thumbnail pages-preview whil reading document,
    – bookmarks
    – remembering last page
    – different layouts for portrait and landscape (especially the zoom-to-fit single page landscape!)
    – dropbox recognizing you
    – the feeling that there isn’t someone (perhaps named Steve…) who’s trying to tell you not only what you should and should not do, but also what you should and should not like!

    Things I disliked:
    – quality of text pdf is sometimes poor, especially in single-page landscape mode
    – a minor thing: if you could tell bookman that a certain document has a cover page, than when reading in two-page landscape mode the correct pair of pages gets displayed (it’s really minor as I don’t see myself reading in this mode as the text is too small)
    – another very minor thing: if you open a document and then move it, the link in the history menu appears broken (but who cares…)

    Wishlist:
    – Wed Download! Like in Fast PDF: type in url, Bookman downloads it. A full-blown web browser is unnecessary. This feature is a MUST!
    – Search tool! It’s very useful being able to search within a text.
    – improvement of quality of displayed page (very important for reading). I find reading in single-page landscape mode a bit annoying.
    – the ability to write a sticky note together with bookmarks (“like iBooks”)
    – continuous vertical scrolling (as opposed to flicking the pages one at a time)

Of course there would be a thousand more things one could hope having: tap-to-zoom functionality, a metadata tagging system in addition to folders, the ability to select copy and paste text, the ability to highlight text, taking notes like in iAnnotate. My wildest dream is probably the possibility to read djvu files as well…

But I got carried away. This application is definitely the best all-around reader.

    Keep up the good work.

p.s. As a final note, I found that Bookman was the only reader I had that didn’t crash while reading a particular cbr. Two thumbs up!

    • September 28, 2010 at 4:34 pm

Please let me add a couple of more things 😛

      Likes:
      – The fact that from bookman I can open a pdf in another reader.

      Bugs(?):
      – I can’t see any difference among the three types of page turning: it’s not incredibly smooth when turning various pages, but it’s cool when reading.

      Hopes:
      – A ‘List view’, in addition to the ‘Shelf view’, to browse files with similar looking thumbnails.
      – A ‘bookmark icon’ in the thumbnail page-preview: not really of fundamental importance, but it might be neat.

      Once again: great app!
      Where can I donate?

Having an issue with the FTP when you try to transfer a file with two adjoining spaces in the title bookman exists completely, the only fix is to change the file name, and I know you shouldn’t have 2 spaces in file names, but our ERP system generates the files (50+ per day) and I am not going to rename them all…..

Other than that love the program.

This is a great app which I been using for about 2 weeks. The best feature that makes it currently better than the iBook app is being able to have multiple bookshelves. One big problem that I been having is that the app keep crashing within 7 sec of loading if there is a PDF or other file it doesn’t like. It doesn’t tell you which one so you either have to delete everything or upload a few files at a time and see which one does not crash.

Somehow I could not move the books around on a shelf to a particular order. Hopefully future updates would have this feature. Great job.

Hi, this is by far one of the best rendering reader, I have tried every single one pdf reader, none has nice layout, bookshelf design, fast rendering like this. However there is one problem, when the total magazines loaded are around 2 pages and few sub folders, the program CRASHED and close if we spend too long on a page.. Please fix this bug =(.. I would definately purchase it if you can fix this problem, am a big fan!!

Hopefully the CBR bug you mentioned is the one that causes it not to read many cbr files.

Also, I’d love for the Landscape as 2page vs 1 page option to be a global setting, rather than it having to be for each individual file.

Other than that, Bookman is the best CBR/CBZ file reader I’ve found for the iPad.

On the PDF side, the one feature missing for PDF’s is the ability to search/find in them.

This is such a promising app, I appreciate all the hard work you’ve put into this already. The bookshelf with optional folders is a big seller too but I haven’t rated the app yet pending the cbr fix. Also it would be nice if the PDF files could retain their bookmarks in this app. Thanks for everything.

    Best app out there.
    I really love it…

Nevertheless, I do have some books with a black page first page and therefore as a cover.
Would be great to be able to select a specific page to be used as a cover.

As well, having the ability to show immediatly all bookshelves at the main page instead of having to tap on the menu icon would be nice too.

    Keep the good job 🙂

Hey there, love this app but it’d be great if you could switch categories easily from the Bookshelf view, maybe just by tapping the Bookshelf header to move between, say, ‘Novels’ to ‘Comics’ etc. Rather than having to hit the bookshelf button on the bottom left and then find the category.

  113. October 6, 2010 at 4:51 am

After one month of using, for me it’s the best reader, since the version 2.1 almost all my problems and questions are solved ( with the choice of layout with defaukt etc )…

The feel and look are pleasant, I succeeded in reading all document pdf without problems, the file transfer in USB mode is correct, no crash during using the reader, good fluidity, function of Zoom, bookmarks etc …..

In short I like much him remain however 2 has 3 things to change to have the perfect product (my opinion):

    – possibility to read the ebooks (epub format)
    – have a sight “bookshelves” view and not an ugly list
    – be able to transfer in USB the directory files and not only documents 1 by 1 then to join together them in a directory (it is in spite of very easy and fast nevertheless currently) or possibility to create in iTunes directly directories
    – possibility to have tags been dependent on the document like kind, authors, comments etc…
    – function of research on the names in all bookshelves or on the famous tags

And if possible, a possibility of reading the pdf in streeaming mode, like reading video or musique with AirVideo or AirPlayer, a serveron Mac or PC. The reader who connects himself to the server and ready to read through Wifi or the 3G.

And for me there is the Top for reader on ipad

Nevertheless a great cheer for the developers for a free application, it’s almost of the pro.

!!! Warnig with the passage to the version in 2.1, properties of readings of the documents are not changed even if one did not read the document they remain the saqme as in version 2.0 (Layout in portrait & landscape) what obliges to take again 1 by 1 the documents already downloaded to take again the default option .
On the other hand not of problem for the new ones

    cheers from France

Damn good all in one reading app around. Hats off. Really.
    Best ideas:
    – ftp / organization via remote directory creation
    – Bringing all those formats together

    Wish list:
    – Navigation is a little unwieldy. It would be extremely nice if we could see other libraries as books ( identified in some way like a glow or dimensional rip or whatever, think L-Space 😛 ) that would take you to the target library. Image could be first book in that library, if putting in a title is hard.

    – epub support, one reader to read them all 😉

Mind putting up a paypal donate link so we can show some love ?

If I have pdf files on my Ipad using another app, how can I have them appear on Bookman without having to transfer them again or duplicate them?

    • October 9, 2010 at 6:08 pm

If the app has a feature that invokes another app as a PDF reader such as GoodReader, you can use it to open the PDF without transfer.
If no, you need to transfer files again.

I’m experiencing the same issue that several users posted, blurry renderings of PDF’s or images found in .CBR and .CBZ’s.

Right now, I end up using Cloudreaders as it renders the pages without any blur.

  121. Oscar

For a document viewer (PDF, cbz, cbr, …) image quality should be a priority, and this app needs some improvement in rendering quality. Pages seem of low quality until you use other viewers to look at the same page and you discover that bookman is underperforming here.

For the rest of the features its the best application for organizing your comics, scanned magazines, documents in PDF, … Those shells with FTP integration is just awesome.

Please, improve image rendering quality , just to stop us thinking that we have problems with our eyes.

Great app. Here is my wishlist:

    1. Dictionaries of English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese…

    Sorry for my bad english.

I have got crashes with Bookman 2.1 on my Ipad. When reading some PDF’s, after a few second, the Ipad come back to the springboard. When I open Bookman again, I have this message :
“an error occured while generating the cache for the file xxxx.pdf at page XX (…) file sent to a directory “error files” (…) opening this file might require more memory (…) reboot…”

I reboot. I try again. Still the same problem (with a lot of other pdf’s too!)

What can I do? Update done.

Hey great to see someone actually supporting and taking suggestions for there app. I love the reader for comics its great to be able to seperate everything into custom shelves.

    Hi Takashi,

In my opinion bookman 2.1 has the potential being the best reader on ipad. The only problem I have still remains to be the quality of an image with zoom from a jpeg image for example. Compared to other reader, image still appears to be blurry compared to other reader (with less other feature). Thanks so much and keep up the good work! 🙂

    Hi Takashi,

I’m having problem connecting through FTP to Bookman with FileZilla 3.3.5.1. FileZilla keeps complaining 530 User bookman cannot login. I’ve tried to set a password, clear the password, with no success. What’s going on? Thanks for such a great program.

    • December 9, 2010 at 11:34 am

      Hi Joseph,

When you use FTP, make sure that iPad and PC are in the same network. The first three number groups in both FTP server’s IP address and PC’s IP address should match. For example, if the FTP server’s IP address is 192.168.1.xxx, your PC’s one should be also 192.168.1.

      Thank you,
      Takashi

    Hi Takashi,

You have an amazing program here. It’s really well done and well thought. I’d even pay for it =)
However, I’m no longer using it for only one reason: the rendering of PDF and JPGs.

My eyes are way less tired when I read things with CloudReader because the rendering is so crisp and sharp. Even if its interface is totally limited and that the UI isn’t polished.

That’s the only issue I would see with your program. Do you plan a new release with a graphic fix?

    Great job still!

Excellent PDF reader. Would love to see the following features applied…

    1) Folders like iOS. Rather than create multiple Bookshelves, it would be amazing if you could create folders to put the files into.

    2) A “jump to” option. If I’m reading a PDF for instance, I dont believe there is a way currently to go to page X.

    3) Be able to go straight to the start of the file. I’ve found that I’ve read a magazine, if I wanted to go to the start of it again, I have to click previous for so long till it takes me back to the beginning.

Besides the above, excellent App. Keep up the good work.

    Takashi, Great App.-
    Some suggestions for further improvements:

    – If Ibook is also installed on the Ipad, all loeaded ebooks appear under iBook instead under Bookman. (I added the files under Itunes under the app Bookman)I like to keep all in one: Bookman.
    – Adding new bookshelfs functionality doesn’t work correctly. When moving a file and adding a new bookshelf on the fly, it doesn’t move the file to the new bookshelf. Instead, it stops, one has to go back and retry a move.
    – I would appreciate some more navigation buttons. Keep up the great work!
    – Being able to delete a file from the bookshelf after reading it would be nice
    – Being able to collect bookshelves in a Master bookshelf would be great. (the idea of a folder in a bookshelf.) E.g. Ebooks, Comics, Magazines, etc.
    – It would be awesome if one could link to files which reside on a PC (e.g. via wireless, or even over the internet) and “organise” these in Bookman. (without these files being physically present on the Ipad. It seems asif Bookman only recognises files present on the Ipad itself, while my complete archive resides on my PC.
    – Would be nice if one is in edit mode and wants to select multiple files (or even multiple pages of files) if one can swipe over the page selecting multiple files instead of having to tap on each individual file.

==> Keep up the great work!

    Great app really,

A question and a request. I added some epub flies in itunes under the ipad/apps/bookman. However since it does not support the format, I do not see them in the bookshelf and therefore can not erase them. How can I delete those in itunes?
And the request is, please add epub file support.

    Thanks, awesome job!

I just started having problems with this app while downloading some comic books from my dropbox account. It kept crashing and now Bookman won’t even open on my iPad. I tried powering off but that did not fix it. Any thoughts or advice?

The last update (3.0.2) just switched my paid version to a lite version. How can you do such a thing to your customers?

    • May 30, 2011 at 2:01 am

Bookman was not paid version. It was free. New Bookman Lite is also free.
      Bookman Pro is paid version.

The last update has some problems. Update is a Lite version, and when I open one .cbr file, I can’t open other file. It dont fails but did nothing. I push the file and nothing happens. It didnt recognize my old bookshelfs too.
Im very sad about this update. Bookman was my only reader for comics and pdf but now I have to find a more stable application.

    see you

      Sorry for the inconvenience.
I am fixing the stability issue.
If you cannot see your old bookshelves, please tap the gray triangle in the bookshelf list. It shows sub bookshelves.
